This vaccine protects against serious infections like meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia). It is a single injection and protects against 4 strains of the meningococcal bacteria – A, C, W and Y. Usually children aged 13 to 15 (school years 9 or 10) are routinely offered the MACWY vaccine in school alongside the 3-in-1 teenage booster. If you are born on or after 1996 and have missed the vaccine you can still have it up to the age of 25. Students starting University are also encouraged to have the vaccination.
